Senior Lecturer Fine Art (Innovative Printmaking)

I lead the Innovative Printmaking department within Fine Art. I lecture on innovative printmaking and contemporary art within the BA(Hons) and the MA programmes. A strong element of this post is to conduct research into non-toxic intaglio printmaking as well as to further practice-based research in Fine Art at Chester.

ongoing Through the long standing research collaboration with Professor Keith Howard I am annually invited as visiting researcher to the School of Printmaking and Digital Imaging research at RIT, New York. Each visit includes public lectures on my research, student tutorials & research supervision, seminars,and collaborative research.

I gave public lectures on my work in its critical context, regular structural tutorials to all Fine Art students, and devised specialist courses in digital imaging and printmaking. This also entailed staff training.

In 1999 I was invited by Gracefield Arts Centre to establish a new open-access printmaking facility; This also involved successful fundraising bids for a European Regional Development Grant(ERDF) and for commercial sponsorship for the educational programme. At Gracefield I founded a major international summer school programme,‘Innovative Intaglio’ which is a collaboration with the Rochester Institute of Technology, New York.

I was responsible for the development, research, implementation, and tuition of safe and innovative etching methods at this open access and editioning printmaking facility.The workshop emerged as an international centre of excellence in printmaking research and education whilst I was in post, and in the context of the ‘ARE Seminar’ programme I founded in 1995, I taught art and printmaking professionals from over 100 international art institutions.

'Non-toxic Printmaking in Scandinavia'; Copenhagen, Denmark, Speaker.
This symposium / workshop, funded by the Danish government, introduced the acrylic resist etching system developed by myself at EPW to 40 art and printmaking professionals from art Colleges and workshops in Scandinavia.

In 1998 I was invited by Prof Susan Groce to introduce innovative Printmaking methods based on my research findings to the U Maine Printmaking Department. The U Maine Chemistry and Surface Sciences departments also made contributions to the advancement of the non-toxic methodology. This research collaboration is ongoing.
