Title of Paper: Time, Motion, Disintegration
Stream: Repetition and Embodiment-Abstract only
In this paper I am going to discuss two different conceptions of time and motion, in conjunction with the repeated unit. In the first model, I will focus on the notion of time expressed across motion in the work of the Futurists, who employed repeated planes to fulfil their aims and objectives. In the second model, I will be subverting the former model by examining the impossibility of expressing motion across a linear framework. In his ‘Nude Descending a Staircase’ Duchamp championed an anti-retinal art. Later Francis Bacon articulated this very impossibility by claiming that the only way of depicting motion was through distortion. Reinforcing the modernist notion of the artificiality of representation Bacon explores the (postmodern) theme of the fragmentation of identity. He also demonstrates vis-à-vis Bergson the intersubjectivity of time and uses the repeated unit to substantiate his perspectives.
