REPEAT REPEAT CONFERENCE 2007

ACADEMIC STREAMS: Repetition, Labour & Endurance

Chairs Maxine Bristow and Jeremy Turner

This session will address the first theorising of repetitive labour in Marx and its ultimate absorption and critique in a range of practices: the 19th century physical demonstration of labour in the visual arts, the critique and deconstruction of repetitive labour, most notably through a feminist critique of textile production, the isolation of the act of repetition itself, either as a sign of endurance and or spiritual enlightenment in the performances of artists such as Vito Acconcci or Franko B, and a natural engagement with the inherent qualities of emerging media such as the films of Warhol or Goddard. Issues of: duration, boredom, the history of labour, the industrialisation of culture, the limit of experience and the sheer persistence of particular gestures or art forms/products will all be addressed in this stream.
